Last Tuesday, Warren Jeffs, the President/Prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, was convicted of being an accomplice to rape for performing the ceremony. While Utah law sets the legal age of consent for sexual acts at a whopping 14, it does not provide that the acts be performed without the consent of both parties. The FCJCLDS had lobbied for the wording to provide that sexual acts could occur with the consent of “one or more parties,” but that clause was stricken when state legislators pointed out that the only thing more ridiculous than letting kids have sex at 14 was letting them do it against their will.
The victim’s testimony charged that Jeffs was fully aware that she had no desire to marry her cousin and that she was forced by Jeffs to proceed with the marriage. The prosecution also illustrated that Jeffs was fully aware that she would be forced into sex with her assigned husband/cousin. This conviction hails sad news for MTV who were scheduled to air their new Mormon-geared reality show next week. My Sweet Fourteen has since been replaced in the broadcast schedule by reruns of the popular series, Master-P Speaks English.
According to Jeff’s eccentric brand of Mormonism, only men who engage in “celestial marriages” (i.e. polygamy) will be granted entry into the higher levels of Heaven. Other believers who marry only one wife will not gain enough experience points to “level up.” According to the prophet, this heavenly handicapping will also prevent non-participants from accessing any future expansion packs released by Heaven.
The DCN caught up with Jeffs in his holding cell. We asked him why he performed the ceremony (as well as many others like it) even though he knew the law specifically prohibited sex without the consent of “both parties?”
“Details, details…” responded Jeffs. “These practices were commonplace in Biblical times. I mean, if God didn’t want us to have sex with children who are our relatives, wouldn’t there be some sort of story in the Bible about how he destroyed a bunch of people for doing that?”
The DCN wanted to ask Jeffs several more questions, but our interview was cut short by a torrential down pouring of fire and brimstone.
Fortunately for Jeffs, there is a place where sexual acts require
the consent of only “one or more parties” and Jeffs is
on track to spend 5 years to life there. We’re sure he’ll
feel right at home among such like-minded individuals, and his stay
should give him a better understanding of the “details”
involved in sexual consent.
